State Government failing to reduce prison populations & re-offending

In a budget estimates hearing yesterday, the Attorney General Christian Porter confirmed that the States imprisonment rate was spiralling out of control.

The Attorney General predicted the rate of incarceration would grow to 295 prisoners per 100,000 adult population by this time next year (the highest rate of imprisonment of any State in Australia).

The size of the public sector in proportion to the Western Australian workforce has decreased in the last decade from 17% in 1997 to 12% in 2008.

 
CPSU/CSA concerned for the future of the timber industry in WA

Jo Gaines, Branch Assistant Secretary of the CPSU/CSA today said:
“The announcement by the Forestry Minister Terry Redman today about the future of the Forest Products Commission will have a significant impact on future of the timber industry in WA, as well as affecting the lives of workers primarily employed in regional WA.”

We would challenge the statement by the Minister that the sector has matured to a point where private companies can compete with the work that Government has been successfully undertaking for many years.  Last year alone saw Great Southern and Timber Corp going into receivership.  

 
CPSU/CSA calls on the State Govt to come clean on PPP prison costings

Toni Walkington, Branch Secretary of the CPSU/CSA today said:

“The State Government is misleading our community in the PPP debate.
 In relation to prisons for example, they use costings that do not accommodate for simple variables such as the different security levels, economies of scale and extra-custodial responsibilities of public and private prison systems.”
