Corrective Services' workers protest at Barnett Government's Justice System privatisation
Tuesday, 29 November 2011 08:19

CPSUCSA_150Workers from the Department of Corrective Services gathered outside Corrective Services’ Minister Terry Redman’s office this morning to protest against the Barnett Government’s privatisation of the justice system.

CPSU/CSA Secretary Toni Walkington said the workers were targeting the Minister for his continued refusal to release a recent evaluation report on public versus private management of a new Young Offenders’ Facility.

“This report was used as an excuse to award the operation of the new facility to the foreign multi-national company Serco but the Minister refuses to release it.

“We want Minister Redman to come down and explain why he won’t publicly release this report.

“He won’t release it because it would show there is no benefit to be gained by oursourcing this new facility.

“Only last week Serco was fined almost $15 million by the Federal Government for underperformance, poor management and failing in its duty of care to detainees in the detention centres they run and yet the Barnett Government is giving them a contract to run this new facility.

Ms Walkington urged the Government to reconsider the decision to outsource the Young Offenders’ Facility because it will disastrous for the state and put public safety at risk.

“Mr Barnett says he cares about Law & Order but by outsourcing key parts of the justice system to private companies he is putting the community at risk.

“If the State Government walks away from its responsibilities it will not be able to protect the community, Ms Walkington said.
