Banksia Hill Detention Centre riot submission
Prolonged under-resourcing and the unnecessary closure of the Rangeview Remand Centre were key points in our review of the Banksia Hill Detention Centre riot on January 20.
We recently lodged a submission to the Inspector of Custodial Services inquiry into the incident that saw up to 90 cells damaged at WA’s only detention centre for juveniles.
In the immediate aftermath of the riot, we secured extra staff at the centre after and negotiated for the majority of the male population to be relocated to nearby Hakea prison after cells became unusable or their security was compromised.
We have recommended the recruitment and training of extra Youth Custodial Officers as a matter of urgency and the introduction of incentives for existing and prospective officers.
We also believe the re-establishment of a second juvenile facility in WA is essential.
