Quarantine fears as dog team halved

Fears have been raised that WA will become more susceptible to diseases it has fought hard to quarantine against when the number of dog handlers at Perth Airport's domestic terminal is halved next month.

The number of handlers will be cut - most likely from eight to four - from July 1, which will result in dogs spending less time sniffing out prohibited insects, animal pests and animal diseases at the airport.

Community and Public Sector Union-Civil Service Association branch secretary Toni Walkington said the decision was another example of front-line services being reduced as department heads are forced to administer the Barnett Government's budget cuts.
