WA Government hints at sector wage freeze

“That’s ridiculous and our members wouldn’t accept it.”
That is the response from CPSU/CSA branch secretary Toni Walkington after Treasurer Mike Nahan hinted a public sector wage freeze could be considered as the Barnett Government struggles to cope with a record decline in quarterly revenue.
She said the message to government considering the wage freeze as it deals with a deficit of at least $2.7 billion – don’t do it.
Ms Walkington said public sector workers had endured years of cuts and were in no mood for more.
“That isn’t good enough that the government is saying they have to impose cost measures, increase workloads, reduce jobs, sack people and then say that the remaining people have to have a wage freeze,” Ms Walkington said.
“That’s ridiculous and our members wouldn’t accept it.”
The extent of the deficit will become clear when the government conducts its mid-year review later this month.

In order to keep the State of WA functioning the government as well as the people need a properly resourced and functioning public sector.
It is amazing what the government can still find money for these days such as Roe 8 even though the community doesnt want it and other options are more desireable by the community. There are also problems with skill shortages and the government is strangling TAFE.
The government then should continue to keep employing and paying its public servants.
