The Barnett Government would be hypocritical if it didn’t improve its offer to public servants in light of politicians getting a pay rise this week, says the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association. Given the news of the Salaries & Allowances Tribunal granting politicians up to 3.8 per cent increases this week, union state secretary Toni Walkington said the government should do the right thing and improve its offer to public servants.

Public servants will walk off the job at various metropolitan locations today as part of rolling industrial action that seeks a better pay deal for the next three years. Last week Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association members overwhelmingly voted to reject the Barnett Government’s pay offer of 2.5 per cent per year for the next three years. CPSU/CSA branch secretary Toni Walkington said the offer was a paltry one and not enough to recruit and retain public servants who played a valuable role in the community.

The Liberal Party is going for short-term benefit at the cost of long-term services to the community with its freeze on public sector positions according to the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association. Branch secretary Toni Walkington said today’s announcement by the Barnett Government to freeze jobs again and cap pay rises to a maximum of 2.5 per cent would have a major impact on services to thousands of West Australians every week.

Teachers, Education Assistants and support staff will again take to the streets to call for the Barnett Government to return the funding it has ripped out of WA’s public schools. Education Alliance members will also call on the Premier not to slash even more funding in the upcoming state budget. The Alliance will be joined by members of the community, parents and Principals in a Community Day of Action on April 1st.
