Proposed amendments to Work Health and Safety Regulations for WA

The CPSU/CSA recently made a submission to WorkSafe WA regarding proposed amendments to the Work Health and Safety Regulations for WA.

The amendments were largely focused on minimising the cost of safety for employers and reducing red tape.

The CPSU/CSA submitted that this narrow focus is unbalanced and unacceptable, and more needs to be done to improve safety for workers. This relates to the national harmonisation of WHS laws, which has taken years and resulted in varying laws across states and territories.

Our submission aims to stop the Government from attacking your rights at work, which currently includes:

• Reduced asbestos monitoring
• Removing record-keeping requirements of the employer, which shifts the onus of record-keeping onto the employee
• Changing right of entry provisions; and
• Changing professional qualification requirements to ‘competent person'.
