Commission of Inquiry

Earlier this week the Government announced a Commission of Inquiry into ‘where the money went’.

Members know the money disappeared into failed privatisation projects, excessive use of labour hire, contracting out and outsourcing. These were ideological projects driven by the last government which destroyed the capacity of the sector to deliver services to West Australians.

We will be making submissions to this Inquiry and encourage CPSU/CSA members who know where waste occurred to let us know the details at saveourservices@cpsucsa.org

Full statement below.

CPSU/CSA Branch Secretary Toni Walkington today welcomed the Government’s announcement of a Commission of Inquiry into ‘where the money went” as an opportunity to look into wasteful practices of outsourcing, contracting out and privatisation.

“Our members know that the money disappeared into failed privatisation projects, excessive use of labour hire, contracting out and outsourcing. These were ideological projects driven by the last government which destroyed the capacity of the sector to deliver services to West Australians.

“Our members want to deliver valued services to West Australians and in recent years have watched as their jobs were outsourced, the services they deliver were privatised and the sector was consistently undermined, making service delivery fragmented and difficult.

“Just last week the failing privatisation project at Melaleuca resulted in Legal Aid staff removing legal support for female prisoners in order to protect the safety of their staff. This is unacceptable from a social and financial perspective and we will be making the case in relation to privatisation to the Inquiry.

“We know that in 2016 the excessive use of labour hire cost the State Government $52 million in just six months. This Inquiry must dig into the financial and social cost of these labour hire contracts.

“Labour hire is a band aid solution to underfunding departments and it’s time that this practice was wound up.
