Petition update: Give people with disability a say in their own future

Don's Story

Don Lessels lives with three other men in a house supported by Disability Services Commission staff.

In 2013, the Minister for Disability Services announced that homes like Don’s were going to be privatised. When Don’s sister Lyn was asked about the privatisation, she asked who was going to talk to her brother about it and whether anyone was asking him.

In February 2016, Lyn received a letter from the Director General of the Disability Services Commission which stated:

“The Commission has made significant efforts throughout the transition project to ensure that the rights of family members, guardians and other decision makers are fully respected. This includes the right of each decision maker to decide when and how their supported person hears about the transition on (sic) their house.”

It is clear that no one is going to ask Don where and how he wants to live.

Enter: our petition  to give people with disability a say in their own future.

Don’s sister Lyn believes that he should have a say in how he wants to live and she has been trying to get Disability Services to engage with him about the privatisation of his home. So far more than 1,560 people have supported Lyn and Don by signing our petition.

This week Lyn received a letter informing her that Disability Services has set a time to start a supported conversation with Don and his housemates.

The letter is an admission that Disability Services hasn't undertaken supported decision making at Don’s home and it's also an indication of how they could and should be undertaking decision-making across Disability Services Commission services.

Your action is having an impact. If you haven't already, please sign and share the petition with your friends.
