Public Services Matter: WA Labor Commits

During our many conversations and forums with members about building a better future for public services, a common question has been raised about the difference between the policies of the two major political parties likely to form government.

It was at their respective State Conferences that the Labor and Liberal Parties set out their policies.

The CPSU/CSA is not affiliated to any political party. However, some members of our union are also members of political parties and it is through their work within their chosen party that provides an opportunity to influence the policy of governments and potential governments.

At the end of August, the culmination of many of our members’ hard work was realised through changes to the state Labor party platform and the adoption of resolutions on a range of issues important to our members.

In particular, improvements strengthened the role of public services, standards of delivery, resourcing of services and functions, as well as ensuring people employed by government are treated with decency and respect.

The Labor State Conference also adopted the following specific resolution:

Public Services Matter

WA Labor is committed to a state public service that is adequately funded, transparent and accountable as fundamental for our democracy and acknowledges the essential role government and public services play in supporting a fair society and reducing inequality.

WA Labor condemns the Barnett Government’s continual and repeated cuts to public service funding and jobs.

WA Labor notes that the way a government treats its workers reflects its values and agenda. The Barnett Government's attack on the right of public sector workers to job security through the Workforce Reform Act 2014 demonstrates its disregard and disrespect for the important role of public services and the people who provide them.

WA Labor resolves to support the repeal of the Barnett Government's Workforce Reform Act 2014 and calls on all Labor Party members, including elected representatives, to act to repeal the legislation at the earliest opportunity and establish a fair and equitable system for managing state public service organisations.
