The Liberal Party is going for short-term benefit at the cost of long-term services to the community with its freeze on public sector positions according to the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association. Branch secretary Toni Walkington said today’s announcement by the Barnett Government to freeze jobs again and cap pay rises to a maximum of 2.5 per cent would have a major impact on services to thousands of West Australians every week.

Education members joined parents, kids and other school staff to protest the Barnett Government’s $180million in cuts to our public education system. Up to 22,000 are reported to have marched up the Terrace to Parliament House to make their voices heard.

We were advised on Monday 24 March that Government would not make an improved second offer for GA6. On 13 March your workplace delegates overwhelmingly voted to reject the Barnett Government’s pay offer of 2.5%/yr + trade-offs in job security. Our counter-claim of 3.5% in each year + no trade-offs has been rejected by government.

The 2013 Regional Price Index (RPI) survey, which is used to adjust the rates, has revealed changes to the cost of living across the state. The information we’ve received from Commerce indicates that Broome, Carnarvon, Geraldton, Esperance, Jerramungup and areas of the Great Southern outside the District Allowance exclusion zone will consequently receive some increase in their District Allowances. Other areas will experience reductions, some of which will be significant.
