Treasurer Troy Buswell's $140 million budget surplus announced today is cold comfort for people not getting access to much-needed services according to the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association. The Department of Education's Aboriginal Education branch has been gutted by major Barnett Government cutbacks according to the Community and Public Service Union/Civil Service Association. In two years the branch has been trimmed from 25 staff to 15 and by February 2013 is expected to be as low as seven, which experienced staff say is having a major impact on delivering frontline services.

The Department of Finance has confirmed that a contract to outsource audit leave balances for the Office of Shares Services staff has ended. It has come to light that a substantial part of the work was being off-shored.

Children are being exposed to criminals and potential sex predators due to a backlog of Working with Children checks, with some taking up to year. A Government review said there was "some risk to the community" from at least 40 people with criminal records who were able to work with children while waiting for their assessment.
