Child welfare workers are having to take vulnerable children home with them because of a severe shortage of foster families. The Department for Child Protection confirmed this week that staff had had to care for kids in their own homes because appropriate accommodation couldn't be found with latest Departmental figures revealing that 3,910 children were in state care at the end of January, up from 3,276 three years ago.

A service trumpeted by the Barnett Government as the "start of quality care for the state's most vulnerable young people" has had its bed numbers slashed by a third less than two years after it was launched because of budget cuts.

Children are being exposed to criminals and potential sex predators due to a backlog of Working with Children checks, with some taking up to year. A Government review said there was "some risk to the community" from at least 40 people with criminal records who were able to work with children while waiting for their assessment.

The State has abandoned some of its most vulnerable children because the Department of Child Protection can't keep up with the rapid increase in demand for help, according to case workers and their union.
