$1M In Back Pay To CPSU/CSA Members In WA Schools

This year public sector workers have faced agency amalgamations, service priority reviews and are now being threatened with the possibility of forced redundancies.

But one positive campaign has been quietly building, and has recently topped over $1million in back pay to CPSU/CSA members in WA schools.

You heard right, over $1million in back pay.

The four cohorts have been working with the Union over the past 2 years, identifying a very specific duty that thousands of School Support Staff have been doing for free, for years.

According to their agreement, School Support Staff who are on call (mostly to arrange relief) should be paid a few dollars on call allowance before and after-school each day – be paid to be available to work.

Unfortunately, many had never been paid for the role.

Once the Union started Investigating the case, the number of workers affected grew greatly – as did the amount owing. A few dollars, over many days, over many years, has turn into thousands of dollars owed in back pay.

With the latest tally seeing 95 School Support Staff receiving anywhere from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands in back pay.

This result could only be achieved by the dedicated Union staff who have spent months working on this underpayment issue and more importantly our brave members who often times faced pressure from their schools not to get paid what they were owed.

To our brave members who persevered, you stood up, fought and won. Thank you for sticking with it and thank you also to our supportive school communities who recognised the hard work and dedication of our members and stood by them.
