Banksia Hill Custodial Staff Deny Accusations

Reports today that accuse Banksia Hill Detention Centre custodial staff of torture are being strongly denied by staff at the centre.

The story suggests detainees have been subjected to prolonged solitary confinement, obscene threats by guards, and the refusal of meals, visits and showers.

Staff at the Centre are concerned about the allegations being made against them, saying they only want what’s best for the young people at the centre and always work with the utmost respect.

Staff have said today that the Intensive Supervision Unit (ISU) has delivered stability to Banksia Hill for the past nine months.

“Our members have consistently said that they want Banksia Hill Detention Centre to be safe, both for young people and staff.

“The Centre is functioning at its best capacity in months, it is under constant scrutiny and assessment from the Inspector of Custodial Services.  

“The Intensive Support Unit was set up following riots and significant damage at the Centre. Since then, there have been no serious assaults, incidents or need for Special Operations Group intervention at the Centre.

“Members have raised their concerns directly with the Minister about safety and security for young people and themselves and the importance of programs and education services in the Centre.”
