Child abuse grows as govt "abandons' vulnerable kids

THE State has abandoned some of its most vulnerable children because the Department of Child Protection can't keep up with the rapid increase in demand for help, according to case workers and their union.

A senior case worker with the DCP told The Sunday Times that some children were being overlooked for care and staff had resigned because they couldn't cope with the pressure.

"Certainly from my point of view I would be linked to more than 15 cases (at one time). I have known workers that are up at 18," the case worker said.

"You are operating with staff missing because they are on stress leave or they've resigned because they can't cope with it (and so) you're also carrying their workload and spreading yourself so thin that human error does creep in.

"Certainly, the more cases you have or the more complex cases you have (then) the more likely that you are going to miss the quiet cases bubbling along.
