Consumer Protection offices to remain open
The decision to keep the Consumer Protection regional offices open in Kalgoorlie and Karratha is a good one says the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association.
The union had been active in persuading the Department of Commerce to keep the offices open as it looked for budget savings forced on it by the Barnett Government.
The union represents staff who work in those offices.
In July staff at both regional centres were advised of plans to find budget savings that could include closing the offices.
CPSU/CSA branch secretary Toni Walkington said the decision to keep the offices open was a good one as the staff provided much-needed services to the rural communities.
“Now that the offices are to remain open we call on the Barnett Government and Commerce Minister Michael Mischin to outline where savings will now be made,” Ms Walkington said.
“It is important that the government consults with those affected by any proposal that could have an impact on services or staff providing the service.
“These cutbacks are another example of the Barnett Government putting budget pressure on its agencies because of its own financial mismanagement.”
