Indonesian OSH leaders present in Perth
The CPSU/CSA is proud to host two of Indonesia’s most active campaigners for workplace safety as they present in Perth on Wednesday 9 May.
Subono is the General Secretary of SERBUK Union, the Indonesian union for construction workers. Before becoming a union leader, Subono spent 17 years working in an asbestos roof sheeting factory. He has been diagnosed with a pulmonary disorder and witnessed fellow workers die of lung disorders, with no responsibility taken by the employer. He is eager to share his story with Australian unionists and share an international perspective on the dangers of asbestos.
Darisman is an organiser and lead campaigner for the Local Initiative for OSH Network, a non-profit dedicated to improving Indonesian worker’s safety. He is a founding member of the Indonesia-Ban Asbestos Network (Ina-Ban) and has worked as the coordinator of the Network. His current focus is 26 factories producing materials containing asbestos within Indonesia, exposing 7,000 workers to danger.
The presentation has been funded by Union Aid Abroad, UnionsWA and Labor for Aid.
Darisman and Subono will be introduced by the WA Minister for Asian Engagement, Commerce and Industrial Relations, the Hon. Bill Johnston MLA.
This event will be of particular interest to OSH representatives, members working in public health, building safety and construction regulation.
