"My Best Moment": Luke's Story
MEMBER MOMENTS
LUKE, CHILD PROTECTION WORKER
"My best moment actually happened just yesterday when I attended the Achiever Awards, which are our awards for those children in care who have excelled in education and are continuing with further education," Luke said.
"My young person - two years ago, was depressed, suicidal and felt like he did not belong anywhere. That all changed when he was moved to his current placement.
"It has to be understood this child is on the autism spectrum and has always had a very difficult time forming attachments to anyone.
"This new family took him in and made him part of the family. It took a while but by working with the family and with him he began to blossom.
"He has always struggled at school but last November I saw him graduate high school with the dux award for his vet program. This was through a lot of work with the family and the school.
"Yesterday it was with a lot of pride (that) I watched him receive his award for school programs and his ongoing TAFE work.
"I have watched him grow from a scared, confused 13 year old to a strong confident young man. By watching the progress of this young man I know I have done something worth while."
