Open Letter to Colin Barnett

Dear Premier

I write to request that you reverse your decision to implement a recruitment freeze on jobs in the WA Public Service.

It appears your rationale for imposing a recruitment freeze is that a sector that has restrained expenditure at levels below that anticipated by you, will now need to reduce expenditure even further:

“Since 2008-09, general government sector salaries expenditure has ended each year below the original Budget. For example, the general government salaries outcome for 2014-15 was $256 million lower than originally forecast in the 2014-15 Budget (and $203 million lower than the expected outturn contained in the 2015-16 Budget). Accordingly, there is scope to adjust salaries expenditure to more accurately reflect this trend in future salaries budgets.”

The imposition of a further recruitment freeze threatens the quality of public services and the viability of many functions of the public service.

The further extraction of savings from the public sector will not address the fundamental issues for the fiscal management of the state and will only result in negative impacts for services to our community.

As such I write to seek an urgent meeting with our Union’s Executive to discuss the details of the recruitment freeze and other savings measures and the proposed process for implementation.

Arrangements for a mutually convenient time may be made by contacting me on 9323 3800 or [email protected].

Yours sincerely

Toni Walkington
Branch Secretary

The present Government's mismanagement of the States economy is evident.
The ongoing plundering of the public sector for funds is pitiful.

Hi Phillip - neither do we. The freeze is just further evidence of the Barnett Government's poor management of the State's economy and time and time again it is the public who are suffering. We will be meeting with Treasury, PSC and Commerce in the new year to discuss the freeze. In the meantime we are encouraging members to add to the voice of discontent on social media by tweeting Premier Barnett using this link: http://ctt.ec/S6sJd
