Sodex Putting Lives at Risk

The CPSU/CSA empathises with Legal Aid's unprecedented decision to remove legal support for prisoners inside the Sodexo run Melaleuca Prison.

WA Secretary Toni Walkington says "There is a litany of failures at Melaleuca which have put Legal Aid staff and other visitors, staff providing important rehabilitation services and prisoners themselves at risk.

"There is no denying this facility is being poorly run. It is clear that the former Government's Melaleuca privatisation project is a failure and the new Government must review the contract.

“People are being put at risk because of this contract, and that is an unacceptable situation.

“The problems at Melaleuca are more than just teething problems and the only solution is to bring the facility back into public hands so Corrective Services can appropriately deliver the service,” Ms. Walkington said.
