Union investigates impact on Goldfields public services

The impact of the 2015-16 State Budget on public services in regional areas is a hot topic for union officials who are in Kalgoorlie this week.

The Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association is in the Goldfields to get an understanding from public servants on what the impact of budget cuts mean for overall service delivery.

CPSU/CSA branch assistant secretary Rikki Hendon said the Kalgoorlie visit was an important one as the union represents public servants in a wide range of agencies across the region.

“There have been major cuts across all government agencies in recent years and our members are telling us it is getting harder to deliver their services,” Ms Hendon said.

“We know that regional communities often feel the effect of budget cuts particularly deeply as local services are withdrawn and jobs are lost.

“This week we are talking to public servants to find out how we can help them tackle the challenges posed by budget cuts and ensure their working conditions are fair and reasonable.”

Ms Hendon said it had been a while since they had a major visit to Kalgoorlie and said it would be good to connect with people who provide much-needed services for the community.

“We are looking forward to hearing what is important to them and how we can better support them to continue to deliver great public services to the local community.

“Public services in these areas are dealing with unique issues due to their isolation and distance and don’t always get the same support from their employers as colleagues in the metropolitan area do.

“Given the threats posed by budget cuts, it is now more important than ever that public sector workers join their union and come together to campaign for the future of the services they deliver”.
