Public to suffer from costly contract obsession

The public will be the biggest loser when programs are cut and services are reduced as the Barnett Government looks to save money in the wake of services being unnecessarily contracted out says the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association. The union made the comment following news of the two government agencies spending millions on contracts despite State Cabinet refusing to approve the funding.

The government has misread the community

ACTU president Ged Kearney spoke to invited guests at a sundowner at the CSA Centre on Thursday night as part of a two-week national tour of workplaces.

Ms Kearney said the Federal Government had misread the community if it thought it was acceptable to pursue an extreme privatisation agenda by cutting jobs and services.

"The direction the government is taking with the exclusively business-run Commission of Audit, the constant language around workers bearing the brunt of any cost cuts while corporate Australia is encouraged to increase profits and the staggering misinformation about wages growth and the state of the economy all spells bad news for workers and communities," Ms Kearney said.
