The Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association of Western Australia (CPSU/CSA) understands no staff or young people were injured during the course of last night’s incident at Banksia Hill Detention Centre. Following safe resolution of the incident, the union will now initiate conversations with workplace delegates and the broader membership at the centre to discuss the incident and the potential for improved workplace health and safety for workers and young people alike.
Quotes attributable to CPSU/CSA Branch Assistant Secretary Ness Brett:
“The CPSU/CSA understands the incident has been brought under control and continues to be managed by our members at the site. CPSU/CSA members have fought tirelessly to ensure workplace health and safety is now firmly embedded into the culture of WA’s youth custodial facilities, and we intend to keep it that way.
“As the union would with any workplace incident, over the coming days and weeks we will undertake further and detailed conversations with workplace delegates and members to identify improvements to workplace health and safety. We look forward to continuing working with the Department of Justice on addressing matters of this nature and improving safety for all.”
ENDS
- The CPSU/CSA covers 44,000 general public sector workers, one-quarter of the WA public sector, including child protection officers, youth custodial officers, park rangers, veterinary scientists and dental technicians.
- Note to Journalists: Please ensure the full acronym, “CPSU/CSA” when mentioning us. “CPSU” is typically used to refer to the Union that covers Commonwealth, ACT and NT public sector workers. We are related but separate organisations.
