UNION TO ENSURE PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS SUPPORTED THROUGH CHANGES

Monday 31 March 2025

Today the Cook Labor Government announced Machinery of Government changes to be implemented across nine agencies in the public sector of Western Australia. The Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association of WA (CPSU/CSA) has begun engaging with the Cook Government, about the changes to be implemented, ensuring that affected public sector workers are adequately consulted every step of the way.

The CPSU/CSA will soon begin meeting regularly with the Public Sector Commissioner and other relevant stakeholders as the changes and necessary consultations get underway. The Union will also have representatives in a number of consultation groups in each of the affected agencies.

CPSU/CSA Branch Secretary, Melanie Bray, said the union is committed to ensuring the workplace rights of all public sector workers are maintained throughout the process, with a focus on ensuring that the delivery of quality and robust public services is delivered by the public sector workforce and their concerns remain the top priority.

“Today’s announcement of changes to the structure of public sector agencies has likely made thousands of public sector workers uneasy. Restructures to Government Departments are difficult for workers, and the union will be ensuring public sector workers are front and centre of discussions over the next twelve months.

“The CPSU/CSA will be engaging in all avenues to ensure public sector workers are strongly advocated for throughout the implementation of the Cook Government’s Machinery of Government changes. Public sector workers are at the front line of delivering the Government's aims and promises over the next four years and need to be adequately supported and resourced to deliver the public services West Australians rely on each and every day, and we will ensure the Government is held accountable to that.

  • Note to Journalists: Please ensure the full acronym, “CPSU/CSA” when mentioning us. “CPSU” is typically used to refer to the Union that covers Commonwealth, ACT and NT public sector workers. We are related but separate organisations.
