WA DRIVERS LICENSE ASSESSORS SECURE CRUCIAL PAY RECLASSIFICATION

Wednesday 4 February 2026

Following 15 months of consultation and collective engagement by union members, the Community and Public Sector Union/Civil Service Association of WA (CPSU/CSA) has secured a pay reclassification for WA’s Driving Assessors, with all Level 2 and Level 3 Driving Assessors and Regional Assessors to now be unified under a single Driving Assessor position description classified at Level 3.

The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure has advised the union that the new pay classification and position description will be backdated to Friday 23 January 2026, meaning Level 2 Driving Assessors and Regional Assessors will immediately see pay rises of between $150 and $365 a fortnight. Further, a final annual increase secured during the 2024 Your Union Agreement campaign of 3.5% will apply from 13 June 2026, applied to the new base rate. For assessors originally engaged at a Level 2.1, gross pay will increase by over $480 a fortnight by June this year.

CPSU/CSA Branch Secretary, Melanie Bray, said that union’s central role in consultations was thanks to the quick, knowledgeable and collective efforts of workplace delegates and members, who ensured worker voices on attraction and retention, recognition of work value and community expectations of timely service delivery were front and centre.

“Today’s pay reclassification announcement means all assessors in WA will be recognised for the work they do through increased renumeration, improving the retention of workers in the Department and improving accessibility and availability of Practical Driving Assessments for the community. Backdated to 23 January 2026, Level 2 Driving Assessors are set to earn up to an additional $365 a fortnight, and by mid-June up to $480 a fortnight when the final Public Sector CSA Agreement 2024 annual increase takes effect.

“As I’m sure parents who are keen to close the taxi of mum and dad can attest to, Driving Assessors perform a crucial public service for Western Australians. The CPSU/CSA welcomes the Government’s considered use of increased budget revenue to invest in the workforce delivering public services which are accessed by hundreds of Western Australians every day.

“I want to thank our union Delegates, whose on-the ground efforts in the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure, ensured decision-makers had no choice but hear and understand the experience of these frontline service workers. The CPSU/CSA thanks the Department for its commitment to genuine and ongoing engagement with the union, as we continue to work together on matters related to the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure workforce.”
